Audition Notice - Call for Puppeteers: May 2019
The Old Trout Puppet Workshop is now holding general auditions in hopes of finding performers for a truly mighty slate of upcoming projects. We are looking for people who have a way with puppets, but who might also have other skills, such as acrobatics, aerialism, dance, clowning, or acting. The first of the upcoming projects is Ghost Opera which we are producing in partnership with Calgary Opera, and which will premiere in residence at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada; we need people from roughly April 1st to June 9th, 2019. We are also looking for people to join our touring ensemble, which will be performing in potentially several different shows in rep on a semi-sporadic basis around Canada, the U.S., and Europe for the next few years.
For more information, and how to apply, click here.
Deadline: Sunday June 22, 2018

“...inspired ... timely ... a fantastical visual world ... as bleak as it is funny."
“... truly masterful ... mind-boggling ... entertaining on so many levels."
Louis B. Hobson, The Calgary Herald
"... a darkly comic pastiche of the primeval ..."
"... a wild, imaginary world ... fresh, wholly original."
" ... the show is a marvel ... truly enchanting ..."
“...unimaginable creativity and talent ... downright beautiful."
“...a marvellous theatrical adventure, fantastical and ingenious and somehow close to home, that leaves us breathless at every turn ..."

The Old Trout Designing Things Division
Imagine if Shakespeare asked the Old Trouts to design one of his shows.
Well, we did. Perhaps you remember a couple years ago that we designed Twelfth Night at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa? This is that very same production, come west for people who live in Calgary to see it, thanks to our friends at Theatre Calgary are presenting Twelfth Night, "as imagined by the Old Trout Puppet Workshop" as part of their 50th Anniversary Season - which, by the way, is is also a pretty big deal.
Based on a miraculously preserved Baroque ‘Wonder Theatre’ we saw in a castle in the Czech Republic, the design features all the flabbergasting technological marvels of cutting edge theatre from the 18th century. And only a couple puppets. Mostly it’s actual flesh and blood human beings on stage, so if you fear puppets, now is your chance to take in a Trout show, finally. We can't say for sure if the Bard would approve. We'll leave that up to you.

The Old Trouts are teaming up with Calgary Opera and the Banff Centre to present our brand-new puppet opera.
Inspired by an Ancient Greek ghost story, it features a libretto by Giller Prize-winning author André Alexis, and music by celebrated composer Veronika Krausas – a bone-chilling tale about flying dogs, real estate, and crossing the River Styx.

GHOST OPERA
Music by Veronika Krausas
Libretto by Andre Alexis
Direction & Design by The Old Trout Puppet Workshop
The old house for sale on the outskirts of the city is strangely cheap, but then again, the previous owners have all gone mad, and there are dark rumours about something that lives in the well.
One day a stranger arrives who wants to buy it; he says he ‘s not afraid of ghosts, and even seems oddly determined to meet the spirit that claims the house as her own…
